Polly and Digory find themselves among the ruins of the Kingdom of Charn where they unintentionally wake the evil Queen Jadis that we remember from “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”. Digory’s uncle turns out to be a magician who gives them extraordinary rings which possess the ability to transport to other dimensions. The book follows the story of two kids – Polly and Digory – who sneak into the attic of Digory’s uncle and from then on get themselves into all kinds of unexpected situations. Lewis himself wanted the book to be read first. Why? Because this book is a prequel that reveals much needed information about the other books and why and how Narnia, the Lion, the Witch and Wardrobe came to exist. A few days ago, I finished “The Magician’s Nephew” which is actually the sixth book published in the series but it makes more sense to read it first. Some time ago I got as a present this exclusive hardcover edition of the full Chronicles of Narnia which is, by the way, an excellent compilation including beautiful pictures. Of course, that doesn’t mean he is going to be recommending it to his friends, either. And after her review, Falwell doesn’t have any plans to take to the pulpit and preach against a book that uncovers what life as a Christian soldier in training at a school referred to as “Bible Boot camp” is really like. In fact, Falwell’s quiet acceptance of the tell-all seems to signal a quiet breach of the cultural divide between the Christian right and the rest of America.įalwell, a University of Virginia-trained lawyer, left the job of reading Roose’s book up to his wife, Becki, who filled him in on what she thought he needed to know. But he won’t exactly be boycotting Kevin Roose’s An Unlikely Disciple: A Sinner’s Semester at America’s Holiest University anytime soon. Jerry Falwell Jr., chancellor of the world’s largest evangelical Christian college, Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, will not be reading the undercover memoir of life at his school that's hitting bookstores this week. This puts him in conflict with a dumb but ambitious female homicide detective as well as, soon enough, the killer himself, whose approach to serial killing mirrors Dexter's own, uncomfortably so. Dexter's foster sister is a Miami Vice Squad cop working on the killings, so Dexter decides to help her solve the case. The story opens with Dexter at play, kidnapping and killing a priest who has murdered a number of children, then moves on to the main plot, a series of gruesome killings of prostitutes by an unknown madman. I took pride in being the best-dressed monster in Dade County"). What makes this novel zing, though, is the narration-humorous, self-deprecating, smart and sometimes lyrical, it's a macabre fun ride ("I thought about the nice clothes that I always wore. But all his life, Dexter has followed the rules set down by his cop foster father (who knew of Dexter's proclivities), to indulge his passion only by slaying other serial killers. Lindsay's premise alone is worthy: narrator Dexter Morgan, a blood-spatter specialist for the Miami cops, is also a serial killer. It's been years since there's been a thriller debut as original as this one by Lindsay, who takes a tired subgenre-the serial-killer novel-and makes it as fresh as dawn. Reverend Ames writes to his son about the tension between his father-an ardent pacifist-and his grandfather, whose pistol and bloody shirts, concealed in an army blanket, may be relics from the fight between the abolitionists and those settlers who wanted to vote Kansas into the union as a slave state. Ames is the son of an Iowan preacher and the grandson of a minister who, as a young man in Maine, saw a vision of Christ bound in chains and came west to Kansas to fight for abolition: He "preached men into the Civil War," then, at age fifty, became a chaplain in the Union Army, losing his right eye in battle. In 1956, toward the end of Reverend John Ames's life, he begins a letter to his young son, an account of himself and his forebears. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Critics Circle Award, GILEAD is a hymn of praise and lamentation to the God-haunted existence that Reverend Ames loves passionately, and from which he will soon part. “Quietly powerful moving.” O, The Oprah Magazine (recommended reading) NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD WINNER. I was drawn to a line in Genesis that talks about angels falling in love with mortal women, and stewing on that line led me eventually to Luce’s character. Lauren Kate: When I started writing Fallen, all I really wanted to do was write a complicated love story that reached beyond the two protagonists. What made you want to create a series around the fallen angels? What inspired you? Īnnabell: The Fallen Series, explores the story of angels falling from grace and the great battle that created. Luckily, the choices she makes in Torment set her up very nicely to have a lot of romance and passion in her future. In Fallen, she is blindsided by a lot of strange revelations in Torment, she must come to grips with what they all mean and what her role is in the world. In the end, we settled on Torment because this is a kind of growing pains book for Luce. Lauren Kate: My publisher and I had to work to find this title.
